RAF Upper Heyford: A Stark Reminder of Cold War Brinkmanship

During its peak, Upper Heyford symbolised the fragile doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Its F-111 bombers, capable of delivering nuclear annihilation, stood as both a deterrent and a target. The airbase was designed not for survival, but for retaliation—its hardened shelters and sprawling runways prepared for a war that could never be won.

Today, those same structures stand empty, decaying under the weight of time. Yet their significance has not faded. Instead, they remind us of the human and economic costs of living on the edge of war. As new divisions emerge between global powers, Upper Heyford should warn us of nature of the path we are once again treading—one where paranoia fuels escalation, and peace hangs by a thread.
